On-Air Jobs

In cruising thru the "Jobs" section on All Access (12/9/11)...only three ON-AIR jobs in the first twenty listings. If you want to stay in this business, you better learn to SELL.

Amen! or be the best voicetracker in modern day radio history for little money....for 15 stations if it's CC....

Sell what?

For the time being radio has gone the way of the buggy whip. Selling buggy whips is next to impossible.

Now, there ARE still markets, even among the big groups, where radio is viable. As long as market managers dominate their Miller-Kaplan share, they can keep the "high priced" talent.

Let the revenue shares slip and the first reaction is GUT THE PRODUCT, which leads to even further declining ratings AND revenues. It's circular logic.

Radio sales managers preach to their account executives that businesses should invest a minimum percentage of gross revenue for advertising. Reference J. Conrad Levinson's classic "Gurella Marketing."

But how many radio stations INVEST a minimum percentage of THEIR gross revenue in keeping or, God forbid, GROWING their market share.

It's circular logic.

You're half right. Either learn to sell...OR learn to become invaluable to their ratings/revenue success.
